Lara Rabb, B.A., B.Ed., Certified Sleep Consultant

VancouverSleepConsultantLaraLara began working with children and their families 15 years ago as a nanny and preschool teacher. Lara quickly realized that this would be her life’s work and sought an education in teaching. After completing a bachelor of arts degree with a minor in psychology, Lara completed her education degree in 2009. She has worked as a public school teacher in Vancouver ever since.

Lara’s journey with children’s sleep began in 2013 with the birth of her first daughter, Halle. A beautiful joyous time quickly became stressful and taxing when this little one refused to sleep for longer than 45 minutes at a time. Naptimes were filled with anxiety and worry and bedtime had become a laborious task. Drawing on her background and education in working with children, Lara began to search for a better way forward.

In an effort to solve her family’s sleep troubles, Lara read nearly every sleep book on the market! All had contrasting advice and ideas, which seemed practical during an afternoon’s read, but unbelievable at 4 a.m.! After seven months of struggling, the Rabb family decided it was time to hire a professional sleep consultant, and they never looked back. Within two weeks of working with a professional, baby Halle began taking long restorative naps in her crib and bedtime became a breeze.

Inspired by the advice and guidance she received, Lara decided that she too had to become a certified sleep consultant. Lara’s background in teaching helps her design family sleep plans that are well thought out, and organized. The International Maternity and Parenting Institute (IMPI) encourages its consultants to develop plans that are respectful of each individual child’s needs, their development, as well as their parent’s unique wishes. Lara offers families practical solutions and a helping hand forward, with respect to each family’s unique lifestyle.

In addition to her certification as a Maternity and Child Sleep Consultant, Lara practices Dr. Harvey Karp’s philosophies as a, “Happiest Baby on the Block” educator. Lara lives in Vancouver with her husband, daughter Halle, and son Theodore.IMPI_SLEEPSEAL - Copy

When I first contacted Lara my son was six months old and waking every night two hours after he went to sleep for the night. His naps were all over the place and basically it was impossible for anyone in our family to get any rest! I really appreciate how positive Lara was about the things we were on track with, and she quickly created a plan that my husband and I were comfortable with. By the next week he had a nap schedule I could count on, and his nightly 9 p.m. wake-up had basically stopped. I loved that I could contact her any time I had concerns and she would respond in a timely fashion. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her to anyone. Thanks Lara!

I am a first-time mom, blessed with an amazing little girl. Lara has literally been a savior for me when I was losing my cool helping my darling sleep. Lara has reached out to me on a few occasions to let me know she is there for me. She shared a lot of great tips with me and helped me realize where I may not have been consistent with my little one. All it took was a caring conversation for Lara to help me. She truly has a knack for helping families with sleep, and her passion for sleep has been quite apparent. It is only fitting that she thrives off this line of work. You either “got it” or you don’t, and Lara certainly gets it. Much love goes out to this wonderful lady!

Lara is AMAZING!! I can’t thank her enough for everything she has helped me with. I honestly don’t know what I would have done without all of her advice. She listened to my concerns and helped me set out a plan that worked for my son and I. I received numerous comments about how much happier my son was now that he is so well rested. Being a first-time mom is HARD. Always second-guessing everything. Lara reassured me that I was doing everything right. Although we have never met, Lara has helped me become a more confident mom. She was there for me whenever I needed her and I am forever grateful for that. I have already recommended her to a friend and will definitely recommend her to more in the future! Thank you, Lara!

As a first-time mom, I always believed that baby would sleep when tired – boy was I wrong! For the first three months I was guilty of nursing my daughter to sleep anytime she needed to sleep. As weeks turned into months, I realized quickly that nursing her to sleep wasn’t a long-term solution, and that things had to change; it was then that I contacted Lara. I had so many doubts, but I knew it would be an improvement to what I was doing. Lara, thank you for listening and giving me the encouragement and confidence that what we were doing was best for her, my husband and I. I only wish I had contacted you sooner. Our daughter has been consistently sleeping through the night (11-12 hrs) since she was 4.5 months old, and I could never have done it without you. I’m so incredibly proud of us!

Samantha S., Timmins, ON

My husband and I can’t thank Lara enough for her help with our 9 month old son. When we first hired Lara, our son was still nursing for 20+ minutes 1 – 2 times in the night and often it was the only thing that would calm him enough to go back to sleep. The times that he would wake were also not very consistent, which made it difficult to stay up or enjoy a date night out. We were still operating on a nap schedule based on ‘awake times’, which also made getting out of the house at specific times very difficult. By night 6 of the changes, our son was sleeping 11-12 hours a night with only a short dreamfeed, and his nights have been amazing ever since (even when we went on a 8 day vacation to 3 locations)! Lara also helped us get our son on a nap schedule, which has made it much easier to plan our daily outings. Not only has Lara helped immensely with our son’s sleep, but her positive and caring personality made what could have been a stressful process go very smoothly! I would not hesitate in recommending Lara if you need support with your child’s sleep!

Thanks so much for your help and support. You went above and beyond what we’d agreed to help me when sleep training got really tough, and I really appreciate it. I’m also grateful for your approach to sleep training, which offered M so much warmth while she learned to sleep. As you know, your solutions resulted in her starting to sleep through the night almost as soon as we started training, and she now sleeps through the night reliably – amazing and wonderful to be able to rely on a good sleep for our family! Her naps have also improved drastically because she now understands the bedtime signs, and goes to bed happily almost every time. So, for those people who are wondering if a sleep consultant is for them, I would recommend Lara – she develops an approach that suits your family but emphasizes as gentle a transition as possible for your baby. She also helps you, the caregiver, learn to help your child sleep and to feel more in control of your family’s well-being as a consequence…and for us sleeping through the night happened delightfully fast, despite teething, colds, and a traveling Daddy!

Lara, This is a quick note to thank you for your consultation for A. My husband and I were at our whits end on what to do with her sleep issues. We particularly appreciated your support period as it was like having a personal trainer who keeps you on the right track. While it seemed an impossible task to get our baby from waking every couple of hours to sleeping through the night, you made it easy and simple. Most of all, since our daughter has been sleeping better, she is a much happier different baby. You gave us the gift of a “happy, rested baby girl”. Lara my husband and I can’t thank you enough, not only for your advice, but more importantly your support. You were there for us! We couldn’t of done this without you. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!

Lara has been an absolute blessing.  I first reached out to Lara when baby P was only 3.5 months old.  However, because she was so young, I had feared that a) it was too early to start sleep training b) the only solution was an aggressive “cry it out” approach and c) it wouldn’t work. Let me start by saying, it’s NEVER too early to start on good sleep habits!  Frankly, I wish I started earlier! When I started working with Lara, baby P was waking 3-4 times per night for a feed and while her naps were ok, they were fairly inconsistent.  Within 3 nights of solid sleep changes, baby P was down to 1 night waking and by the end of week 2, she was sleeping throughout the night.  Fast forward 1 month later and baby P consistently sleeps a 12 hour stretch from 7pm to 7am!  I actually forgot what it felt like to have a good nights sleep!  I never thought that it would be possible to have a 4 month old sleeping through the night, but baby P is living proof! Lara does not give you a “one size fits all” approach.  She is incredibly thorough and provides solutions that are tailored to your baby and in line with your goals. She provided us with a very gentle approach (the opposite of the aggressive “cry it out” model I feared).  More importantly, and what I appreciated the most, was that Lara was there with us every step of the way.  Whenever we hit a road block or there was a regression, Lara was there tweaking the plan and providing the support and advice to get us to our goal. Since working with Lara, I have noticed such a positive change in baby P’s temperament. She is such a happy baby and I attribute a lot of that to her healthy sleep habits.  For anyone thinking of sleep training, my advice would be to do it!  I am so grateful that we had the opportunity to work with Lara and I would highly recommend her!

Frequently Asked Questions

What age are your services most suited to?

We are happy to work with any child right from birth, up to age 5. With the younger babies, we are most likely to recommend a custom package with sleep education as the focus. While it is never too early to start with healthy sleep habits, and a well-rested household, no formal sleep training will take place for children under the age of 6 months. We do offer “what to expect” packages for those who are expecting, and will cater them to your particular wants and needs.

Do you do solely “cry it out” forms of sleep training?

Absolutely not. A holistic approach means really examining all aspects of the family dynamic, to ensure the best methods are used to remedy the situation. As part of Lara’s certification, she has read 22 sleep books, and relies on strategies from all of them in working with families. It is her hope to utilize creativity and experience in solving sleep struggles. We will always try to gently “nudge” a child to a better night’s sleep, rather than “train” them.

We think our child is going through a sleep regression. Is it best to hold off on your services until this is over?

Sleep regressions are major developmental PROgressions in your child’s life. The first 18 months are full of all kinds of changes, and as a result, sleep regressions will occur. Families who have laid the groundwork for healthy sleep habits tend to ride regression phases out quite quickly, and find themselves back on track relatively fast. If you are feeling like you are constantly into another “regression” phase and things do not seem to be getting any better, I would certainly suggest getting some help from a certified consultant.

How long will it take for us to see results?

Every child is different! With consistency, careful planning, and open communication, most families see an improvement by day 4! We work closely together for 3 + weeks, and so we have many days to iron out all of the details as needed.

Will there be crying?

Crying is an infant’s first and best form of communication. In working with babies, there tends to be some crying here and there! Even on the best of days.

Lara does try to keep the parental crying at bay however, with quality listening, empathy, and a supportive framework over what our babies are trying to tell us, and how to best respond. Each individual child will respond differently to sleep coaching. And every family will choose a different methodology that supports their personal goals and beliefs.

Are you going to put us on a super strict schedule?

No two babies are the same. I say, babies are not robots, and neither are we. There has to be some flexibility in scheduling, especially for those infants with older siblings who require school drop-offs, and pick-ups. Lara will cater the schedule to YOUR family, while ensuring it matches up with sleep science methodologies and best practices.

Are your services “attachment parenting” friendly?

Yes, they are. Lara will sit down and really get to know you and your family’s wishes for better sleep. We will then create a plan together that you feel supports your parenting philosophy, and your family is comfortable with.

Have you worked with co-sleeping families who wish to transition their little one to a crib or bed for independent sleep?

Yes, of course. Many families come to us wishing to move from a family bed to an independent sleep scenario. We are very creative in finding supportive ways to make this transition less stressful for everyone.
